Hugh Calkins died on August 4 at his home, peacefully, at the age of 90 after a wonderful life filled with family and far-reaching achievements in his two professional passions — the law and education. He cared deeply about fighting injustice, solving poverty, promoting social good through the rule of law, and the right of every child to a high quality education. He was also deeply devoted to his family and his true love for 61 years, Ann Clark Calkins.
“Chu,” as his grandchildren called him, was known to some as a first-rate attorney, to others as a profoundly dedicated education reformer, and to others as a selfless leader in the Harvard University community. We, his children, know him as the moral compass of our lives. We invite you to leave your own remembrances of Hugh Calkins here and to join in our celebration of what he himself referred to as his “fortuitous life.”
